Selfies are memories. Selfies hold love. Selfies can create unity. But selfies can also be distractions.
Selfies, at first glance may seem like just a simple picture of ourselves or with others. However, to me they are a form of self expression, a way to document special moments and events, and even nowadays, a tool used for building connections. In today’s society, we’re overly loaded with images of “”perfect” people, selfies offer the chance and shine light on our authentic selves, flaws and all.

Selfies are a form of empowerment. I see them as a way to take control of my own narrative. Instead of letting others define me, selfies give me the opportunity to present myself in whatever fashion or manner I desire. I can share my new makeup look, capture a funny moment with my friends, and so on. I have the ability to express my personality and mood in a visual representation. It’s somewhat like a digital footprint where we’re able to mark milestones, trips, and everyday moments like make up my life.

Beyond personal pleasure and expression, as previously stated, selfies are a great tool for connection. By sharing and uploading selfies on social media, it allows me to connect with extended friends and family with a simple comment that they make. This sparks conversation and is a way to keep in touch! They can also foster a sense of community, and even inspire others to feel confident in their own skin by embracing their own authentic beauty. So, while selfies may seem superficial, narcissistic, and cocky to some, selfies hold a lot of meaning to me. They’re a celebration of self, a way to control your image, a way to stay connected, and can be used as an inspiration for others to love who they are just how they were created.
