Today, news comes in various ways, forms, and is accessible from our pockets. The shift from traditional legacy journalism to digital news reshaped how information is produced, received, and interpreted.
Digital news has many advantages such as speed, accessibility, interactivity, and a plethora of sources. Digital news has various perspectives we can learn from and form our own opinion on different topics. We have news with us anywhere we go and have the capability of uploading information as well and allows different voices to be heard.
However, digital news comes with fake and misinformation that has potential to be perceived the wrong way. Although, speedy news is an advantage, it’s also a disadvantage as this can lead to a wildfire of fake news spreading and unverified statements. Additionally, the way social media and algorithms work nowadays, we’re more likely to see information we agree with can limit our exposure to different perspectives.
Traditional news such as newspapers and broadcasting are often trusted sources as their credibility has been established over years. Also, their focus is based more on an in depth story and not just a good headline. Their fact checking process and oversight is crucial which means it’s more likely to be reliable.
On the flip side, traditional news can be slow to deliver news/information in comparison to digital news. It’s also less accessible to people now due to the format it’s delivered in. In today’s society, we tend to use our phones for pretty much everything now. Traditional news just isn’t in style anymore.
As a vulnerable young adult, digital news specifically can affect me as it’s hard to verify statements and current events going on. My mind just wants to immediately believe the first thing I see or hear, but I know that modern media isn’t necessarily a perfect option.
