Netscape was one of the first web browsers created. During the time of 1994, Netscape created a space on the internet to navigate it easier. By 1996, this network had 36,000,000 users and deemed itself as one of the most valuable tech companies on the stock market. However, in contrast, Microsoft was also up there in the charts as one of the biggest companies as well, which was created by Bill Gates. Microsoft grew and expanded very quickly with revenues up to $94,000,000 in 1984, then just 10 years later it reached up to $4 billion. It was clear that Microsoft didn’t like competition. They played the game dirty. They used various strategies which would crash other companies down for the benefit and profit of their own. This was during the 90’s.
Nothing quite showed such the evolution of society more than the internet. By the early 90s, it began with only a few thousand connectives users, however by the mid 90s, it adapted hundreds of millions of connected devices. Additionally, Microsoft didn’t necessarily like the fact that the internet was starting to become more available to anyone who had a computer. This means their access to the internet became devalued as it was more so open to anyone at this point.
This was a threat to them because they built their billion dollar company on the dominance they acquired over this software. Now, the world didn’t need their access to different windows because through Netscape all you needed to do was install their web browser and boom, you were connected to the internet. Bill Gates and Microsoft felt so threatened by this, he ultimately crashed Netscape and the U.S. government had to step in. Although Microsoft beat Netscape, later on, they lost the browser wars to Google.
